Sound in the Gulf refracts and reverberates off the seabed and the surface rather than travelling cleanly, and high salinity and temperature change the propagation profile through the day — so detection ranges are shorter, false contacts more common, and operator training matters more than raw sensor specification.
Dense commercial traffic adds an acoustic clutter problem that has no equivalent in open-ocean operations. Classification, not detection, is where these systems earn their cost.
