Counter-UAS has moved from a niche to a standing requirement across Gulf critical infrastructure, borders and events. The systems that work are layered, integrated into an existing command picture, and honest about what happens after detection.

What does counter-UAS procurement look like in the Gulf?

It is increasingly bought as a layer of an existing security system rather than as a standalone product. Buyers have learned that a detection system which cannot hand a track to the command centre, and cannot support a decision about response, creates alerts rather than capability.

That shifts the evaluation. The questions that decide a bid are how the system classifies a track and with what confidence, what its false-alarm rate is in the local environment, how it integrates with the command and control system already in service, and what response options are legally and operationally available to the end user.

A mobile command and control platform we coordinated for a GCC law enforcement agency integrated counter-UAS with real-time operational capability, and led to a multi-phase pipeline of roughly USD 12M for further systems and expansion.

Why do single-sensor counter-drone systems disappoint?

Because each sensing method has a failure mode the others cover. RF detection misses an autonomous drone flying a pre-programmed route with its link off. Radar struggles with small, slow, low targets against clutter. Electro-optical needs a cue and daylight or thermal contrast. Acoustic has short range. A single sensor is a demonstration; a layered system is a capability.

The Gulf environment adds its own constraints — heat, dust, high RF congestion around urban and airport sites, and a great deal of legitimate air traffic to discriminate against.

What is the hardest part of a counter-UAS programme?

The response decision, not the detection. Detection is a technical problem with commercial answers; what to do about a detected drone is a legal, jurisdictional and operational question that varies by site and by end user, and the answer determines what equipment is worth buying at all.

Programmes that specify effectors before establishing who has the authority to use them, over what airspace, and under what rules, tend to buy capability they cannot lawfully employ.
